Gretsch has always sounded beautiful when I've played their guitars, I have one of their open back banjos and its by far my favorite banjo I've ever played on. Don't even consider it. Play some in a store if possible, so you can get a feel for which one you like the best. Very clear, very precise, I can learn easily from them. If you don't know what brand to buy, buy Yamaha.
In their rich history there have been little misses, but over all Aria guitars are supreme to their competitor especially at the price point. And they were shitty guitars, too. Without plugging it into the amp it's loud enough but not as loud as an acoustic so as to disturb my flatmates - of which I do a lot when I'm bored while burning the midnight oil. And that, I figure, would be for the case, strap, tuner, and extra set of stings! Jackson is owned by Fender now and are a very good guitar for starters. I've played a lot of their models and as far as a fantastic balance between price and sound, you can't really beat that one.: I'm not sure whether it was supposed to be a train whistle -- "a lonesome hobo's squall" -- or maybe his impression of Slim Whitman's version of Indian Love Call.
